What is Marketing?

When I found this picture it made me think of the definition of marketing.  What does it make you think of?  And how might it relate to marketing & what we plan to study this year?  Post a comment with your own caption to this photo.  Be sure your comment includes your name.

After posting your comment, read the article What is Marketing? by Michael Brenner.  I also think it is interesting to read the comments that were made to this article.  If time allows, read the comments as well. Be ready to discuss in class.

Social Responsibility - Spring 2013

Social responsibility refers to the duty of a business to contribute to the well-being of a community.  Ways that businesses make sure they are socially responsible are by enacting policies and procedures to protect our environment & ensure worker safety, being sensitive to workplace diversity, and contributing the well being of individuals through employee wellness.  See student websites on these topics below.
  • Environmental Protection: P2, P4, P6
  • Workplace Diversity:   P2, P4, P6
  • Job Safety:   P2, P4, P6
  • Employee Wellness:   P2, P4, P6
Further, a socially responsible business engages in ethical business practics.  Ethics are principles of morality or rules of conduct.  Students have also created websites on this topic.
  • Business Ethics:  P2, P4, P6
Finally, the government plays a role in ensuring that businesses are socially responsible.  In fact, government is our biggest business. The government oversees protection activities  regulation, and provides public assistance.  Students created websites on two ways the government is involved in protecting consumers: through the protection of intellectual property & unfair business practices.
  • Intellectual Property & P2, P4, P6
  • Unfair Business Practices:  P2, P4, P6

Digi-Tools Bloggers

The learning potential of having students blog is endless because it includes the chance to practice writing, reflect on others’ thinking, and respond to critical analyses of one’s own work. The purpose of having students blog in Digital Communication Tools is for students to learn to communicate effectively with a sense of audience, be able to publish their writing for others to view, and share with their peers what they have learned.

Right now I have 26 bloggers (aka writers and publishers) in Digital Communication Tools (aka Digi-Tools). Take a look at what they are learning & doing in class!  Each name should be hyperlinked to their respective blog.  Students' first blog post was on their reflections during our Digital Citizenship unit & also includes an embedded infographic that they created using a new Web 2.0.  Please make comments on their posts in order to continue our online discussions and model proper digital citizenship.
